Jack-o’-Lantern Salt Painting

This fun pumpkin craft puts a spooky Halloween spin on the process-based art activity of salt painting.

My son loved the unusual method we used to paint our paper jack-o'-lanterns. I'm sure your kids will get a kick out of it too.

You will need:

• orange paper or cardstock (we used a patterned scrapbook paper)
• white or clear glue
• table salt
• black watercolour paint (acrylic paint diluted with water, or water and black food colouring will also work)
• paintbrush

What to do:

1. Begin by cutting out pumpkin shapes from your orange paper.
2. Use the glue to make silly or scary faces on the paper pumpkins.

3. Shake or pour generous amounts of salt over the pumpkins.
4. Lift the paper and gently shake off excess salt. I recommend doing this activity on a tray or outside to keep the salt off your floor!

5. Dip the paintbrush into the black watercolour paint and lightly touch it to the salt. Watch as the colour "magically" spreads out over the salt. Repeat as needed to turn all the jack-o'-lantern's features black.

Once your jack-o'-lanterns have dried, tape or glue them to a thick piece of black paper. You'll have a cute kid-made Halloween decoration with a cool, textured finish.
