Lunar New Year Lanterns
Jan 19, 2016
Celebrate Lunar New Year with easy DIY red and gold lanterns! Pop battery-powered tea lights into your lanterns to make them shine.
What You'll Need:
- glass or plastic jar with lid
- red tissue paper
- scissors
- glue
- water
- paintbrush
- gold ribbon
- gold washi tape, stickers or sparkles
- hammer and nail (optional)
- blow dryer (optional)
- battery-powered tea light (available at dollar stores)
How It's Made:
1. If you'd like to hang your lanterns, you'll need to poke some holes in each lid. The easiest way to do this is with a hammer and nail — kids will need help with this step. Make two holes in each lid. Cut a piece of gold ribbon and thread it through the holes. Tie the ends in a bow.
2. Cut or rip the red tissue paper into squares.
3. Thin white glue with a bit of water. Use a paintbrush to cover the jar with glue, then stick red tissue paper squares all over the surface of the jar. Add another layer of glue on top of the tissue paper. Let dry (you can speed up the drying process with a hair dryer!).

4. Use gold washi tape to decorate your lantern and lid. You could also use stickers or sparkles! Cut pieces of gold ribbon, curl them and glue or tape them to the bottom of the jar.
5. Pop a battery-powered tea light into your lantern and get ready to celebrate Lunar New Year!
