No-Carve Pumpkin Idea: Use Temporary Tattoos

BY DYAN ROBSON, AND NEXT COMES L

Carving pumpkins is an annual tradition for us, as I'm sure it is for many families. However, my kids usually lose interest in the pumpkin carving after about five minutes. This mini-pumpkin craft for kids is the perfect alternative to carving a large pumpkin with them. We'll still carve the big pumpkins together as a family, but the kids loved decorating their own mini pumpkins in the meantime.

These temporary-tattoo decorated mini pumpkins are an adorable fall craft idea for kids. They're easy to make and the kids can decorate them with their favourite characters!

For this pumpkin decorating craft, you will need:

  • temporary tattoos
  • mini pumpkins
  • cloth
  • small bowl of water

If your child isn't familiar yet with how to apply temporary tattoos, then show them how to peel the plastic off of the tattoos before applying them to the pumpkins. Also, you might want to keep a small bowl handy for garbage. Trust me, the plastic that covers the tattoos go everywhere and can be impossible to locate if you don't keep an eye on it!

Then have your kid(s) dip the cloth into the water. Place the wet cloth over the back of the tattoo and hold firmly for 30 seconds or so. Then carefully peel the paper off to reveal the tattoo. Your child can repeat as necessary. Depending on the age of your child, they may need assistance ensuring that the tattoo gets enough water on it to successfully transfer the image.

We decorated a variety of mini-pumpkins. My youngest, K, decided to go for a little Rider Pride pumpkin by using some Saskatchewan Roughriders tattoos, while my oldest, J, and I decorated our pumpkins with popular movie, TV, and video game character tattoos.

The finished mini-pumpkins would make a lovely centrepiece or window decoration. Or add a bunch of them to your front steps on Halloween!
