Popcorn Kernel Fall Sensory Bin

I absolutely love the colors of fall, even it if means another cold Canadian winter isn't too far behind. However, this fall sensory bin for toddlers and preschoolers captures those warm autumn colors without bringing on cooler temperatures. Plus, this sensory bin is super simple to put together and encourages lots of fine motor practice.

To make this sensory bin, I used:

  • popcorn kernels
  • felt leaves - I found these at the dollar store.
  • acrylic leaves - I found these at Michaels. They can usually be found with the seasonal items or in the vase filler aisle.
  • fake maple leaves - I found these at the dollar store. Can you tell that I love my dollar stores?
  • measuring cups - You can use any kind of scoops, spoons, or cups that you have on hand.

We have never used popcorn kernels for sensory play before, so my boys were quite intrigued to play with them. They did lots of scooping, pouring, and dumping - all great for strengthening fine motor skills!

Using measuring cups in a sensory bin is also a good way to explore math concepts. As my boys were scooping the popcorn kernels, they were exploring volume and measurement. They also counted how many scoops it would take to fill up a bigger measuring cup.

Simple sensory play with beautiful fall colors, mixed with some fine motor work and playful math...I'd say that this sensory bin was a hit!
