Preschooler Craft: Washi Tape Flower Pots

There are two things toddlers love. Okay, maybe it's just my toddler, but there are two things he loves: scissors and tape. So to capture his attention, I simply need to tell him that scissors will be involved and he is ready to go. To play off of my toddler's interests, I had my two boys decorate plain flower pots from the dollar store.

To make your own washi tape decorated flower pots, you will need:

• Flower pots
• Washi tape
• Scissors
• Mod Podge

Letting your toddler practice cutting with scissors is great for developing fine motor skills.

Tape is also great for fine motor practice and language development. Talking about the colours and patterns of the washi tape encourage language development, while searching for the end of the tape and peeling works those fine motor muscles. My two-year old was quite purposeful with the placement of the tape, looking for the perfect place to put each piece of tape.

And look at how pleased he is! He is completely in his element, happily cutting and taping away.

My four-year old also enjoyed making this craft. He made quick work of his flower pot, declared he was all done, and moved on to something else. I love the contrasting patterns and colors that he chose for his flower pot.

Once the boys were done decorating their flower pots, I sealed them with two coats of Mod Podge.

We plan on planting some herbs in these washi tape flower pots and cannot wait to display them along a window sill in our kitchen.
