Rainbow Ice Garlands

With a gorgeous winter wonderland all around, we thought it might be fun to bring some colourful beauty to the scene.

Here is a simple and stunning way to encourage outdoor fun, learn about colour mixing and do a little science lesson at the same time!

You Will Need:

  • ice cube tray
  • water
  • food colouring
  • string
  • scissors

An ice cube tray, 4 bottles of food colouring and a ball of red yarn.

Instructions:

1. Take your food colouring and drop colour into each cube area to create a rainbow within the tray. Mix colours together to get a range of tones—this is a really fun way for kids to see how colours combine to create new colours.

2. Slowly pour water into each cube area until it almost reaches the top of the tray.

3. Measure your string to be double the length of the tray and cut it.

Leave length on each end of the string, then place the string along the ice cube tray and push it to the bottom of each cube area.

4. Carefully transport the ice cube tray outdoors to freeze. This is a great opportunity to talk about the different states of matter and how water behaves at different temperatures.

5. Wait an afternoon or overnight, until the water is completely frozen, then gently pop out the icecubes.

There you have it. Your very own rainbow to hang in the trees!

As the ice melts, you can watch the colourful splashes appear on the snow and perhaps even incorporate them into a snowman!

Enjoy!
