Make Cool Frozen Rainbow Orbs and Sculptures

OK, enough of winter already. Time to bring in the rainbows with some rainbow ice orbs and sculptures!

What You'll Need:

• balloons
• food colouring
• a healthy dose of imagination

How It's Made:

To start, put several drops of food colouring into your balloon:

• 18 drops of red for a red orb
• 18 drops of blue for a blue orb
• 18 drops of yellow for a yellow orb
• 18 drops of green for a green orb
• 16 drops of yellow and 2 drops of red for an orange orb
• 9 drops of red and 9 drops of blue for a purple orb

Now stretch the neck of your balloon over your faucet and fill up with water.

Tie them up (the more the merrier).

We then gently placed them in the snow to freeze.

After one night in the snow, I rotated them all. it seemed that the snow insulated them a bit, so the bottoms were still not frozen. Two nights outside and they were ready.

Cut off the balloons and reveal your rainbow orbs!

We discovered that the best way to stick them together was to make a slush out of water and snow.

It also helped to prop the towers up against something — we used buckets and sticks. After a couple of hours, everything was frozen together and they were totally solid!

We made rainbow towers...

And a rainbow caterpillar with blueberry eyes (the eyes were stuck on with the snow and water slush)!

You are only limited by your imagination here. Let the kids take the lead, and be there to offer a helping hand if need be.

What a terrific way to bring some colour into the stark white of winter!
