Spring-Themed Water Play at the Sink

When my son was 2.5 years old I began setting up activities for him at the bathroom sink. With the help of a short stool he was finally tall enough to comfortably reach his hands into the sink. He loved the new-found freedom of being able to wash his own hands but would inevitably use too much soap and too much water. Plugging the sink and giving him a few carefully chosen objects to play with became the perfect way to harness his enthusiasm.

Water play is almost always a hit with young children. Doing it at the sink (in the bathroom OR kitchen) is a great way to keep little ones happily occupied while you make supper, take a phone call, or tidy up (making sure to stay close by your little one if he or she is still a toddler, or course).

My son is now 4 and is mature enough to be left unsupervised in the bathroom. He initiates play at the sink himself, although I do still set up a play prompt there every now and then, especially if I need to check a few things off my to-do list!

For this spring-themed water play activity, I tinted the water with blue food coloring and added a sprinkle of green glitter. I added three floating candles (two flowers and a butterfly) in the water, along with a fabric flower. All these items can be purchased at the dollar store and re-used for other activities or for decorating. I also placed a small plastic bowl and scoop on the side of the sink. For an added sensory element, try pouring a few drops of essential oil or scented soap into the water.

My son loved scooping and pouring the sparkly water, pushing the candles under the water, and swirling the flower around.

One of the best things about water play at the sink is how easy it is to clean up. Before the fun begins, put a towel or two on the floor to soak up any spills. When your child has had enough, simply rinse and dry the toys, drain the sink, toss the towels into the laundry, and you're done!
