Winter Craft for Kids: Pine Cone Snowy Owls

By Maureen Macmillan, Twig and Toadstool

We've been learning about some winter creatures in our neck of the woods, and felt inspired to create some of our very own pine cone snowy owls.

What You'll Need:

  • pine cones
  • white paint
  • roving or cotton batten (in white)
  • orange, yellow and white felt
  • permanent marker
  • glue gun and glue sticks
  • wood rounds (we used branches we cut into slices)

How It's Made:

First go on a pine cone hunt (this is the fun part). We found these three that seemed well suited for a snowy owl family!

Paint the entire pine cone white. Let it dry.

When it is dry, wrap your roving or batten around and then stuff it into the pine cone itself.

It should look like so!

Cut small circles out of your yellow felt. These will be your eyes. Using a permanent marker, draw in your eyeballs.

Now cut out your wings, beaks and headpieces.

Using a glue gun, glue it all into place.

Now attach each snowy owl to a little wood round. We sliced up a branch to make ours, but a circular piece of cardboard would work well too. This gives your owl a bit more stability so it can be easily played with.

If you want, you can make little accessories to play with too. We added a few toadstools to our snowy owl set!
