Winter Craft: Toilet Paper Roll Snowflake Decoration

If you were hesitant to take down your holiday wreath because there was nothing to hang in its place, fear not! Have the kids make this bright and cheery snowflake decoration. It’s an easy and cost-free way to perk up your front door for the rest of the winter season.

Kids of all ages will enjoy the fun and creative process which includes painting, measuring, cutting, sorting and using a low-heat glue gun.

The nice thing about our snowflake is that it’s made from items in your recycling bin, so there’s no need to make a trip to the craft store. It’s perfect for times like these when we’re staying at home, and our stash of craft supplies might be running low. 

What You'll Need:

• 4 toilet paper rolls (or 2 paper towel rolls)
• white paint
• paint brush
• pencil
• ruler
• scissors
• clear tape
• low heat glue gun
• ruler

How It's Made:

Paint the toilet paper rolls, inside and out, with white paint.

Next, you’ll need to cut a section out of each cardboard roll so you’ll have circles that decrease in size to build your snowflake with.

To do this, set one cardboard roll aside. We’ll leave this one as is, and use it to make the six large circles in the center of the snowflake.

Use a pencil and ruler to mark the rest of the cardboard rolls as follows:

• 2nd cardboard roll: 2 parallel lines 1/2 centimetre apart
• 3rd cardboard roll: 2 parallel lines 1 centimetre apart
• 4th cardboard roll: 2 parallel lines 1.5 centimetres apart

Note: Don’t cut along these lines yet.

Next, turn your cardboard rolls over and mark six equal sections on each roll.

Now you can cut along the parallel lines to remove a section from each cardboard roll.

Then cut along the lines you made on the other side to chop each roll into six sections. Tape the cut ends back together to form your circles and sort them, according to size, into four piles.

Now you can build the arms of your snowflake. For each arm, you’ll take one circle from each pile. Glue them together from largest to smallest with your glue gun. Repeat for all six arms of the snowflake.

Arrange the arms of the snowflake on a flat surface, and glue the largest, inner-most circles together.

Attach a ribbon to your finished toilet roll snowflake and hang your cheery winter decoration on your front door.
