Magloire's brother killed in Toronto

A skilled basketball player with a scholarship to play at a U.S. school this fall and a brother in the NBA, was killed early Saturday in a city ravine.

Justin Shephard, 19, was found unconscious and bleeding from what medics called "a penetrating head wound," possibly from a gunshot, on a bridge near a downtown subway station.

He was dead on arrival at hospital, said police Staff-Sgt. Tom Russell.

Shephard had just graduated from high school and was set to attend a Maryland prep school on a basketball scholarship in the fall. He was the younger brother of Jamaal Magloire, who plays for the Charlotte Hornets.

Lou Sialtsis, Shephard's high school vice-principal, said he was shocked and saddened by the news.

"We knew Justin had had a difficult life and we were hoping that things would have turned around for him," said Sialtsis, adding that Shephard would have graduated later this month.

Police Insp. Graham Hanlon said Shephard had a minor record as a youth and was known to police but added there was no information to link the murder to gangs or drugs.
