Al MacInnis is set to be honoured with a banner in the rafters at the Saddledome.

The Calgary Flames announced Wednesday that the former defenceman will be feted on Feb. 27 prior to a game against the St. Louis Blues. He'll be the first player honoured under the new "Forever A Flame" program, which will see the sweater numbers of former Flames kept in circulation with the current team.

"I am truly honoured to receive this recognition as a member of the Flames family and to have my name and number recognized by one of the finest hockey teams I have ever had the pleasure to compete on," MacInnis said in a release.

A first-round pick of the Flames in 1981, MacInnis would go on to be named an all-star eight times in 13 seasons with the team. He also took home the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP when the Flames won the Stanley Cup in 1989.

MacInnis continues to hold the franchise record for assists with 609.

He went on to spend the final decade of his NHL career with the Blues and had his No. 2 retired by that franchise in 2006. A year later he was inducted to the Hockey Hall of Fame.
