James Reimer traded to Sharks by Maple Leafs

The Toronto Maple Leafs' net is Jonathan Bernier's for the near future.

General manager Lou Lamoriello on Saturdaytraded goaltenderJames Reimer to the San Jose Sharks along with forward Jeremy Morin for netminder Alex Stalock, forward Ben Smith and a conditional fourth-round draft pick in 2018.

It's believed the conditional pick would be a third-rounder should the Sharks advance to the Stanley Cup finals.

In 32 games this season, Reimer has a11-12-7 record, 2.49 goals-against average and .918 save percentage.

"James is an experienced NHL goaltender who will help add to our depth at that position as we head down the stretch run of the season," Sharks GM DougWilson said in a statement released by the Sharks.

Reimer, 27, has seven games of NHL playoff experience with a 3-4 mark, 2.88 GAA and .915 save percentage.

The trade ends a lengthy tenure for Reimer in Toronto which featured various highs and lows. A fourth-round pick in 2006, Reimer played more than 200 games for the Leafs, compiling a .914 save percentage. He played in both the starter and backup roles during a career which began in the winter of 2011 when Reimer burst on the scene as a relative unknown, nearly guiding the Leafs to an unlikely playoff berth.

The high point of his career as a Leaf arguably came during the lockout-shortened 2012-13 season. Reimer went 19-8-5 that year with a .924 save percentage in the regular season.

Lamoriellopicked upMorin in a trade with Chicago in early Januaryfor fellow forward Richard Panik, In 41 American Hockey Leaguegames this season between the Toronto Marlies and Rockford IceHogs, Morin had 28 points on 11 goals and 17 assists.

"Jeremy gives our group another versatile forward and a player that our coaching staff is familiar with," Wilson said.

Garret Sparks, who was 3-1-0 in five appearances for the Maple Leafs earlier this season (2.58, .915save percentage), was summoned from the Marlies to back up Bernier in Montreal on Saturday night. The 22-year-old is 13-4-3 with a 2.34 GAA in the AHL this season.

On Nov. 30, the native of Elmhurst, Ill., became the first goalie in Maple Leafs history to debut with a shutout, making 24 saves in a 3-0 win over the visiting Edmonton Oilers.

Stalock, who last appeared in net for San Jose on Feb. 11, was 3-5-2 with a 2.94 GAA in 13 games this season. The native of St. Paul, Minn.,won both his starts for the AHL's San Jose Barracuda this season, posting a 1.96 GAA.

In 62 regular-season games with the Sharks, the 28-year-old Stalock was 24-19-7 with 2.37 GAA.

Smith, 27, had no points and a minus-1 rating in six games with San Jose this season, while compiling eight goals and 10 points in 14 contests with the Barracuda. He has 25 goals and 44 points in 181 NHL games with Chicago and San Jose.

"Alex and Ben have both been important members of our team on the ice but even more importantly, they aretremendous teammates and first-class individuals," Wilson said.

It's the second transaction between the clubs in less than a week. Last weekend, the Leafs dealt defenceman Roman Polak and centre Nick Spaling to the Sharks for a pair of second-round picks (2017 and 2018) as well as the contract of forward Raffi Torres.

Toronto continues to unload its roster for future assets. In addition to Reimer, Polak, and Spaling, the Leafs have also dealt forward Shawn Matthias and former captain Dion Phaneuf in February. The club is likely to continue dealing ahead of the Monday trade deadline.
