World champion hammer throwers Rogers, Katzberg book Olympic spots at Canadian trials

Ethan Katzberg won the men's hammer throw, besting the Olympic standard once more, with a championship-record throw of 82.60 metres at the Canadian Olympic trials on Wednesday in Montreal. Rogers did the same in topping the women's field in the hammer throw at 75.05 metres.

World champions Ethan Katzberg and Camryn Rogers have their tickets to Paris booked and ready.

Katzberg won the men's hammer throw, besting the Olympic standard once more, with a championship-record throw of 82.60 metres at the Canadian Olympic trials on Wednesday in Montreal. Rogers did the same in topping the women's field in the hammer throw at 75.05 metres.

The pair both the top-ranked hammer throwers in the world were the only athletes to earn spots for the upcoming Olympics on Wednesday.

Katzberg of Nanaimo, B.C., has enjoyed a strong year after a breakout 2023 season. The 22-year-old opened his campaign with the furthest throw in the world in 16 years at 84.38 metres back in April, and Wednesday was the sixth time in eight competitions he's thrown over 80 metres.

Heavy metal night on Day 1 of the 2024 Olympic & Paralympic Athletics Trials saw world champion hammer throwers Ethan Katzberg & Camryn Rogers become Canadian champions and earn their nomination to Team Canada at the upcoming Olympic Games in Paris.

He won the world title in 2023 with a then-Canadian record of 81.25 metres.

Rogers of Richmond, B.C., won silver in 2022 and gold in 2023 at the world championships. The 25-year-old recently matched her season best of 77.76 metres on June 21 in Spain.

Jake McEachern won the men's under-20 hammer throw with a best of 67.32. Elise Drake topped the leaderboard in the women's U20 hammer throw with a best of 50.40 metres.

The trials run through Sunday at Complexe sportif Claude-Robillard.
