Triple A to the rescue. No, not that triple A

by Paul Jay, CBC News online

Thinner mobile devices have changed expectations consumers have for batteries - from their size and weight to the amount of juice they can provide.

But it's still nice to know an old-stand by -- the triple A battery -- can perform stand-by duty when needed.

Philips Electronics announced this week they are coming out with a mobile phone capable of running for up to three hours on a rechargeable AAA.

The new Xenium NRG has a slot where a user can put a single AAA battery to provide an extra couple of hours of energy after the main battery dies.

It's odd how long it took for someone to come up with this idea, and a sign that of all the old stand-by batteries, triple A's seem best suited to meet the larger demands of smaller devices. Like this nifty one.
