Robot wars, the junior edition

by Paul Jay, CBC News Online

Elementary and high school students from Canada participated in a robotics competition over the weekend at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, with a team from St. Catharines, Ont. teaming with two U.S. schools to take home one top award.

The Simbotics team from Governor Simcoe Secondary School in St. Catharines teamed with schools from Morristown, NJ and San Diego, California to win the World Champion Alliance award in the FIRST Vex Challenge (FVC) World Championship.

The FVC was one of three competitions held in the Goergia Dome under the banner of FIRST, or For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology, a robotics competition organized by U.S. entrepreneur Dean Kamen, the inventor of the Segway personal transport device.

The competition includes the FIRST Lego League (FLL) for children age 9 to 14, the more intermediate FVC, and the advanced Robotics Competition Championship.

There were 18 Canadian teams participating in all from British Columbia to Newfoundland.
