Spark: Test driving the PS3's DualShock 3

By Nora Young, host of CBC radio's Spark

Gamers who use Sony's PS3 have been in a state of withdrawal since the gaming system came out. They've been deprived of the DualShock 3 controller for Playstation 3 since it shipped out last year. Well, the quivering controller is finally out! In this video column, Jesse Wente and Nora Young, host of CBC Radio's Spark, take the DualShock 3 for a test drive.

What's interesting is that Sony hasn't bothered to fix a much complained about controller design. That is, unless this one feels substantially different from the 6 Axis, yet looks exactly the same.

Way to go Sony... you've finally caught up with what Nintendo was doing in the mid 90's.

It's taken quite some time... the Xbox 360 controller one-ups this considering it's been out for 2.5 years already.

Sony had a legal battle over the patent of the rumble system which is why is was not in the sixaxis at launch time, Microsoft had it too but they settled out of court so they could ship controllers with rumble at launch. I dont know who is complaining about the Sony controller design since its probably the most critically acclaimed design of a controller ever.

Got the new Dual Shock and rushed home to try it out. I tested it out with Call of Duty 4 and some other games but was dissapointed to find out that the "rumble" wasn't there. It appears that sony will only have the rumble ability on the newer games.
Also was told by the best buy sales kid that Sony is launching the new dual shock in a package with the system and metal gear solid 4 in a few months.

Hmmmmmm... Such an original idea! Seriously Sony, hasn't changed in 10+ years.

I'll be the one to say that Sony controllers are more finger cramping then that of an Xbox 360. I know many PS2 playing freinds who play constantly. They complain off their fingers hurting constantly and usually can't play for more then four hours, as oppose to the xbox. Personally though I like the design of the PS controller.
