Stadium roof collapses after Midwest snowstorm

A storm in the upper midwestern United States has generated enough snow to cause the inflatable roof ofthe Minneapolis Metrodome to collapse.

The Minnesota Vikings'Sunday NFL football game against theNew York Giants had already been pushed to Monday becausethe Minneapolis airport is closed.

After the collapse, the game's venue was moved to Detroit's Ford Field. Metrodome officials told the league the roof wouldn't be ready in time to play Monday.

Thedome suffered damage to two of its triangle-shaped Teflon panels, said Bill Lester,executive director of the Metropolitan Sports Facilities Commission that operates the stadium.

The storm began Saturday, forcing theGiantsto spend the night inKansas City. The stadium roof collapsed early Sunday morning. There were no reports ofinjuries.

The storm forced the closure of several roadsin Minnesota, as well as in Iowa, South Dakota, Nebraska andWisconsin asanywhere from 40 to 50 centimetres of snow fell.

This same system was expected to move into Ontario by Sunday night,bringing high winds, heavy snow and rain.

Snowfall amounts of 30 centimetres or more are possible in communities like Sudbury to the north. But forecasters say it will be mostly rain to the south.
