60 Minutes Says Trump Backed Out Of Election Special

Trump has backed out of a 60 Minutes primetime election interview, a longstanding CBS special that features both candidates.

For over half a century, 60 Minutes has invited the Democratic and Republican tickets to appear on our broadcast as Americans head to the polls, the program said in a statement.

The statement said both the Harris and Trump campaign agreed to sit down for an interview, but that Trumps campaign backed out.

After initially accepting 60 Minutes request for an interview with Scott Pelley, former President Trumps campaign has decided not to participate, the statement said. Pelley will address this Monday evening.

Harris will speak with correspondent Bill Whitaker during the special, which airs Monday at 8 p.m. ET.

Trump Uses Middle East War To Attack Harris In New Ad

The Trump campaign released a 30-second television advertisement using the escalating turmoil in the Middle East to characterize Harris as a TikTok performer unfit to serve as commander-in-chief.

The ad features what appear to be artificial intelligence-generated images of Russian officials, Hamas militants and Irans Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei reacting to real footage of Harris dancing in light-hearted moments, and in one instance of President Joe Biden stumbling on the stairs to Air Force One.

Like us, China also saw their weakness, the narrator begins, while quoting a Bloomberg article about the reaction to Harriss nomination in Chinas state-run media. The word weak is how the reporter characterizes the response, but the ad implies a Chinese official said it directly.

The spot goes on to repeat Trumps frequent claims that Biden and Harris leadership emboldened Russia to invade Ukraine, the Palestinian group Hamas to invade Israel and even for Iran to strike Israel with ballistic missiles, which the ad treated as something that has yet to happen, suggesting it was produced before the missiles landed on Tuesday afternoon.

The message of the ad is confusing, however, since it claims somehow that Irans decision, which contributed to the sense of chaos around the Biden presidency, was designed to help Harris.

Iran thinks Harris is so incompetent, new intel shows they're trying to help Harris win the election, the narrator says, as the image of a headline about Iran preparing a ballistic missile attack on Israel appears on screen. America doesn't need another TikTok performer. We need the strength that will protect us.

Cook Political Report Shifts Texas Senate Race From 'Likely' R To 'Lean' R

The Cook Political Report on Tuesday shifted its forecast for the Texas U.S. Senate contest in Democrats ' favor.

Rep. Colin Allred (D-Texas) has been gaining in the polls on incumbent Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), prompting the nonpartisan political handicapper to rate the race as "lean" Republican rather than a "likely" GOP win.

The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee recently announced big advertising campaigns in Texas in Florida to boost their chances of keeping the Senate. And the fact that Cruz fled the state for Cancun during a winter storm in 2021 is hurting his reelection bid.

"Lone Star state still remains tough for a Democrat, but Allred's fundraising/heavy ad spending, plus Cruz on defense on abortion + Cancun has tightened contest," Cook Political Report's Jessica Taylor said on social media .

Vance's Former Debate Foe Says He's A Scared Little Boy Behind The Beard,

Former Rep. Tim Ryan, the Ohio Democrat who lost a Senate race to Vance in 2022, was the last person to share a debate stage with him. Slate called him to ask what twe should expect ahead of tonights vice presidential debate.

I feel like JD Vance is the kind of person who will say whatever he needs to say to advance himself with very little regard to the truth, Ryan told the outlet . To me, hes just a scared little boy behind the beard, and he wants everyone else to be as scared as he is.

Ryan said that good preparation would be key for Walz, who was coached in part by Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg playing Vance in practice sessions.

"I think he's much more disciplined than Trump, but he can also get upset," Ryan said of Vance.

Trial Date Set For Attempted Trump Assassin

Judge Aileen Cannon, who was also assigned to oversee Trumps stalled classified documents case, has set a Nov. 18 trial date for Ryan Routh, the man accused of attempting to assassinate Trump last month.

Amid War And Hurricane Devastation, Trump Fawns Over Kubrick Film 'Full Metal Jacket'

As tensions grew in the Middle East and Americans suffered in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, Trump found time to marvel over the movie Full Metal Jacket.

On Tuesday, Trump appeared at a manufacturing facility in Waunakee, Wisconsin, a battleground state. While he criticized the federal response to the disaster, and dubiously claimed the world was more peaceful when he was president, Trump spent a disproportionate amount of time essaying Stanley Kubrick's film critiquing the Vietnam War.

It was a deviation from a long, favorite Trump anecdote about a general who the GOP candidate claims told him ISIS could be defeated in four weeks. The veracity of the story is unclear.

Trump eulogized R. Lee Ermey , the U.S. Marines staff sergeant-turned-actor who looms large in the 1987 film's opening scenes.

Trump posited Ermey should have won an Oscar, but didn't because he wasn't part of the establishment, to put it mildly.

How good was that movie?, Trump mused. It doesn't get too much better.

Trump Demands More Redactions In Insurrection Case Before Election Day

Trump's lawyers on Tuesday called on a federal judge to order more redactions to be made in a key legal brief filed by prosecutors last week, establishing evidence in the former president's looming Jan. 6 election subversion case.

As Election Day looms, Trump is seeking to keep as much of the case as he can away from public scrutiny.

Harris Is Trailing Trump In Georgia, New Poll Finds

A new Quinnipiac University poll published today showed Trump ahead by five percentage points in Georgia among likely voters.

How The CBS News Moderators Are Preparing For The Walz-Vance Faceoff

CBS News Norah ODonnell and Margaret Brennan will moderate tonights vice presidential debate.

The two journalists have been working with the networks political team to prepare for the closely watched event, which could be the last debate before November's election.

ODonnell described the matchup as a "unique opportunity for the American public to see the two vice presidential candidates debate the most important issues for voters."

"We recognize the historic nature of these debates; and our goal as moderators is to ensure a substantive and civil conversation that helps voters understand more about what can be complex policy positions," she added.

Harris Scraps Penn. Bus Tour To Survey Storm Damage In Georgia, North Carolina

Kamala Harris will visit Georgia on Wednesday and North Carolina likely later this week, as both stakes take stock of the full impact of Hurricane Helene. Harris staffers told the Associated Press they want to make sure her visit doesnt impede local disaster response efforts.

The vice president had originally planned to traverse Pennsylvania on a bus tour with her running mate Tim Walz on Wednesday. The tour will go on, with Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman (D) sitting in for Harris.

President Joe Biden , meanwhile, will be in North Carolina on Wednesday.
