The first time I saw a choker necklace was on Shannen Doherty's character Brenda Walsh on "Beverly Hills, 90210 ." She wore the black velvet type that reminded me of the story about the woman with the ribbon around her neck, who lost her head when it was untied. Princess Diana was also a fan of the style, though hers were usually adorned with pearls and were the epitome of elegance.
Macabre fairy tales and '90s pop culture aside, these necklaces are popular again. Called "chokers" because they sit at the base of a woman's throat, they made an appearance on the fall 2012 runways of Ralph Lauren , Jean Paul Gaultier and Givenchy . Some of our favorite celebrities have picked up on the trend, choosing the bold necklaces over dainty, layered personal jewelry. Whether you go for a plain gold collar-like piece or something more elaborate, the choker necklace can finish off just about any look. Check out 34 celebrities who have donned the piece, and tell us, will you try a choker?
