Cuban-American superstar gymnast Danell Leyva  won the silver medal in the men’s parallel bars final at the Rio Olympics  on Tuesday. His stunning routine scored him a 15.900.

Oleg Variaiev of Ukraine won the gold medal, with a score of 16.041. Russia’s David Belyavskiy earned the bronze medal, with a score of 15.783.

Leyva’s accomplishment is particularly meaningful after his rather subpar performances at U.S. Olympics qualifying events   he was initially chosen as an alternate, rather than a competing athlete, and was only officially added to the team after John Orozco got injured during training. So Leyva’s nearly impeccable routine can be considered somewhat of a redemption, and certainly proof that he deserves his place on Team USA .
