The Time Is Ripe To Explain The Difference Between Fruits And Vegetables

The Time Is Ripe To Explain What's A Fruit And What's A Vegetable
|

You say tomato, we say aggravation.

The debate over what constitutes a fruit or a vegetable can get old in a hurry.

But a new video from SciShow breaks it down in an easy-to-digest way. Host Hank Green starts by warning viewers not to flaunt their expertise, before tactfully dropping his knowledge about how fruits and vegetables are classified. The clip is good fun -- and you'll finally learn why a strawberry isn't really a berry.

"Botanically speaking, a fruit is a seed-bearing structure that develops from the ovary of a flowering plant, whereas vegetables are all other plant parts, such as roots, leaves and stems," according to LiveScience.

That means avocados, beans, pea pods, corn, cucumbers , nuts, olives, peppers, sunflower seeds and tomatoes are technically fruit.

But if you really want to start an argument, tell someone that a banana is really a berry.

That kind of knowledge doesn't grow on trees.
