Kamala Harris Builds Campaign Momentum, Donald Trump Ramps Up Attacks: Live Updates

Follow along for the latest updates on the 2024 election.
|

Vice President Kamala Harris continued to build momentum in the first week of her presidential campaign, as former President Donald Trump and other Republicans ramped up their attacks on the likely Democratic nominee.

The presidential race was upended July 21 when President Joe Biden announced his decision to bow out amid concerns he wouldnt be able to beat Trump in November. Since then, Harris has secured key endorsements from most of the Democratic Party, raised a record amount of money and narrowed Trumps lead in a key poll. Speculation has grown over who Harris will select as a running mate, with names like Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly , Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro and Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear reportedly in the mix.

Meanwhile, Trump and his running mate, Ohio Sen. JD Vance, have held a slew of campaign events across swing states. They have sought to paint Harris as a liberal radical, highlighting positions she took during the 2020 Democratic primary.

Here's The Latest In The Showdown Between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris

  • The Trump campaign has been wishy-washy about debating Harris, refusing to commit to a previously scheduled date in September hosted by ABC News. Trump wants the debate moved to Fox.

  • Trump made alarming comments on the campaign trail Friday evening, telling a group of religious conservatives that they will not "have to vote again" in four years if Trump gets a second term. "We'll have it fixed so good, you're not going to have to vote," Trump said, making clear his propensity for authoritarianism.

  • Vance's history of bizarre remarks has come back to haunt him. Trump's vice presidential pick has not only floated the idea of a national abortion ban, but suggested that people without children should have lesser voting power. And this week, he managed to make his "childless cat ladies" comment even worse by saying he had "nothing against cats."

  • Meanwhile, Harris has secured endorsements from the three most recent Democratic presidents Biden, of course, along with former Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton and from former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

  • Polling shows Harris gaining on Trump. Biden had been consistently lagging in the polls behind his Republican rival, but Harris and Trump were effectively running neck and neck in three outlets' recent surveys.

Harris Backs Bidens Call For Supreme Court Reforms

Harris released a statement Monday that supports Bidens call to Congress to enact sweeping changes to the Supreme Court, including an enforceable ethics code and term limits for justices.

There is a clear crisis of confidence facing the Supreme Court as its fairness has been called into question after numerous ethics scandals and decision after decision overturning long-standing precedent, she said.

Some of the reforms proposed include 18-year term limits for justices and ethics rules that would require justices to disclose gifts, refrain from public political activity, and recuse themselves from cases in which they or their spouses have financial or other conflicts of interest, Biden said in an op-ed published Monday.

Biden and Harris also called on Congress to ratify a constitutional amendment that would limit presidential immunity.

These popular reforms will help to restore confidence in the Court, strengthen our democracy, and ensure no one is above the law, Harris said.

Biden Argues For Supreme Court Changes

Biden argued for Supreme Court reforms in a Washington Post op-ed published Monday morning. The changes include term limits and a code of ethics. The proposal has little chance of congressional approval before Election Day but Democrats hope it will help to focus voters.

Trump Denies Changing For The Better After Assassination Attempt

Former President Donald Trump warned that the July 13 assassination attempt on him may have made him worse.

I want to be nice, Trump told rally-goers in St. Cloud, Minnesota, on Saturday. They all say, I think hes changed. I think hes changed since two weeks ago. Something affected him.

No, I havent changed, he continued. Maybe Ive gotten worse, actually. Because I get angry at the incompetence that I witness every single day.

Trumps remarks effectively abandoned Republican sentiments that followed the shooting at a rally for the GOP presidential nominee in Butler, Pennsylvania.

Lindsey Graham Laughs Off Trump Saying No Need 'To Vote Again' If He Wins

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) could only laugh when asked about Donald Trump saying that people wont have to vote again if they elect him to a second presidential term in November.

The comments raised alarm for Trump critics, who worried he was hinting at an end to elections as theyre normally held if he wins. But Graham gleefully downplayed the remarks after being asked Sunday on CBS Face the Nation if Trump was threatening to take the reins of the entire democratic system.

Hes trying to tell the Christian community and anybody else whos listening [that] the nightmare that were experiencing will soon be over. Give me four more years, and Im going to right this ship called America and pass it on to the next generation, the South Carolina senator explained.

J.B. Pritzker Burns JD Vance On Humiliating Couch Rumor

Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker (D) doubled down on his string of digs at Vance, amplifying a humiliating rumor on Sunday about the Republican vice presidential candidate's relationship with couches.

You know, [Trump's] running mate, as you probably have heard, is, you know, getting known for his obsession with couches and [as] somebody who is hiding his views on a womans right to choose, the governor told ABC's "This Week." And then, just broadly, the attack on people who are childless and saying that we ought to raise taxes on childless people and calling them cat ladies I think he apologized to cats, but he hasnt apologized to women.

The Illinois progressive is reportedly one of Harris' possible choices for running mate and would go toe-to-toe with Vance if he joined the ticket.

Critics Question JD Vance's 'Weird' Defense Of Wife Usha After White Supremacist Attacks

Sen. JD Vance (R-Ohio) acknowledged but did not condemn white supremacist attacks aimed at his wife, Usha Vance, over her Indian descent on Friday.

Look, I love my wife so much. I love her because shes who she is, former President Donald Trumps running mate told Megyn Kelly on her SiriusXM show.

Obviously, shes not a white person, and weve been accused attacked by some white supremacists over that, he continued. But I just I love Usha. Shes such a good mom, shes such a brilliant lawyer and Im so proud of her. Read more here .

Trump Floats Huge Investment In Artificial Intelligence With Rant About Having Too Much Electricity

Speaking at a Nashville conference for the cryptocurrency Bitcoin, Trump suggested that his administration would invest a huge amount of resources into artificial intelligence with little regard for how it could impact climate change.

Well be having power plants built at the sites, Trump said, without specifying any locations. He said he would use nuclear power and fossil fuels to generate the electricity needed to fuel artificial intelligence models -- which, along with Bitcoin mining, consume large amounts of energy.

We will be creating so much electricity that youll be saying, Please, please, president, we dont want any more electricity. We cant stand it. Youll be begging me. No more electricity, sir, we have enough.

At another point, he told the crowd , "A lot of you people are in the American Dream. But youre going to be crushed if you dont elect me. I hate to tell you, you dont elect me, youre gonna be crushed."

Trump pledged to fire Securities and Exchange Commission Chair Gary Gensler, saying that the U.S. has cryptocurrency laws that are "too unclear, and too tough, and too angry and too stiff," Axios reported .

Gaza War Skeptics View Harris As New Hope Despite Lack Of Real Split With Biden

Citing images of dead children and desperate hungry people fleeing for safety, sometimes displaced for the second, third or fourth time, Harris said she told the Israeli prime minister to get this deal done to help Palestinians and free Israeli hostages whom Hamas captured in the Oct. 7 attack that sparked the current fighting.

Biden rarely uses such vivid language in addressing Palestinian distress. Still, rhetoric is for now the chief difference between Harris and him when it comes to the war. As she develops her presidential campaign, managing continuity and contrast with the president on Gaza is likely to remain a top concern for Harris and her team.

Second Gentleman Gives Trump A Tip On Saying Harris First Name

Second gentleman Doug Emhoff nodded to Trumps stubborn refusal to correctly pronounce the vice presidents first name as he addressed a small crowd in Wisconsin.

He campaigned for Harris at two events in the swing state on Saturday.

Harris: We Are The Underdogs In This Race Against Weird Trump-Vance Ticket

Harris walked onstage at a fundraiser in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, to a standing ovation and enthusiastic applause, after being introduced by musician James Taylor.

She began her stump speech by praising Bidens record and saying that, as a former prosecutor, she knew Donald Trumps type.

"We are the underdogs in this race, Harris later told the crowd. We are the underdogs in this race, but this is a people-powered campaign.

You may have noticed Donald Trump has been resorting to some wild lies about my record. And some of what he and his running mate are saying, well, it's just plain weird. I mean, that's the box you put that in, Harris said.

She also voiced her hope that Trump would consider debating her as scheduled on Sept. 10, because we have a lot to talk about. As she was driven to and from the venue, pool reporters noticed people holding signs reading "Trump is weird" and "Cat ladies for Kamala." Some pro-Trump signs were also spotted along the route.

Wall Street Journals Right-Wing Editorial Board Slams Smart-Aleck JD Vance

The Wall Street Journals editorial board can normally be counted on as a firm ally of conservatives and the Republican Party. But its contributors are displeased with Donald Trumps choice of JD Vance as his vice president, and scolded the campaign for choosing a candidate with so much baggage in a piece published Friday .

The editorial seized on Vances remark against childless cat ladies that resurfaced this past week. As a Senate candidate in 2021, Vance had told Fox News' Tucker Carlson that the country was being run by childless women who are miserable and want to make the rest of the country miserable, too.

The comment is the sort of smart-aleck crack that gets laughs in certain right-wing male precincts. But it doesnt play well with the millions of female voters, many of them Republican, who will decide the presidential race, read the piece.

The editorial board also wrote disapprovingly about the way Vance attempted to clean up the mess. Speaking to Megyn Kelly on her radio show , Vance said that he stood by the essence of his remark and that he had nothing against cats.

Vances remarks might suggest that at some level Mr. Vance really doesnt respect people who make different life choices, the board said.

According to a report in the new online news outlet NOTUS , Rupert Murdoch the head of a media empire that includes the WSJ and Fox News had lobbied Trump to reject Vance.

Fox conducted the surveys between July 22 and July 24, just after Biden announced he would stand down.

Samples of voters in both Michigan and Pennsylvania were evenly tied, with 49% support for Harris and 49% support for Trump in each state. In Wisconsin , Trump had a slight lead, with 50% support over Harris 49% support.
