Director Joel Schumacher, known for 1980s and 1990s hits like Flatliners, St. Elmos Fire, The Lost Boys, and a pair of notorious Batman movies starring Val Kilmer and George Clooney as the caped crusader, died Monday morning at the age of 80.

The cause of death was a yearlong battle with cancer, his publicist said in a statement.
