A Secret Service Uniformed Division officer suffered a self-inflicted, non-life-threatening injury on duty Saturday in the negligent discharge of a service weapon, the division told HuffPost on Monday.

Some media reports initially said it was a Secret Service special agent involved in the incident but a spokesperson for the uniformed division clarified the matter.

There are no reported injuries to any other individuals and the officer was evaluated at an area hospital, a spokesperson said. The Secret Services Office of Professional Responsibility will be reviewing the facts and circumstances of this incident.

Special agents, like the ones in plain clothes often surrounding the president, protect top U.S. and visiting officials , among others. They also investigate financial crimes. Secret Service uniformed officers wear obvious law enforcement gear and protect the facilities and venues secured for those officials.

The mishap in D.C. occurred at a sensitive time for the Secret Service, which has fallen under intense public and political scrutiny over its handling of recent assassination attempts on Donald Trump , the former president who is the Republican nominee.

In July a gunman managed to get a line of sight at Trump at a rally in Pennsylvania, grazing his ear and killing an attendee. This month an armed suspect was accused of lying in wait to assassinate the former president at his golf course while he played.
