There are two types of people in the world: Folks who decorate their living space in a singular style and maintain that vision year-round and others who have storage boxes full of seasonal decor occupying space in an attic or garage that gets rotated in and out of the home depending on the time of year. The latter group is where I belong. When retailers update their offerings to showcase products celebrating upcoming holidays, my cart and heart is full.

Halloween is coming up quick and I/we have important decisions to make. Whats our vibe this year? Target has always been one of my first stops for finding new additions to my holiday collection, but theyve truly outdone theirselves this time. Their collection from New York-based designer John Derian  is a masterclass on how to decorate for Halloween as an adult. Its elegant but affordable. Its spooky without being cheesy. Derian manages to find new ways to present us with the traditional pumpkins, spiders and skeletons without it feeling overdone.

Realistically, I live in a tiny New York City apartment so I have to narrow down my selections or face the disapproving glare of my loving husband. With that in mind, Im sharing the items from the collection that I really cant live without (and neither should you!)

1
A spider web pillow

Arachnophobes may want to skip ahead but for everyone else, this geometric design can complement your subtly spooky space.

2
A set of 4 bird highball glasses

Black birds are underutilized in Halloween decor, but there's something about the vacant eyes on this glassware that is delightfully frightening . Alfred Hitchcock would approve of this purchase.

3
A black cat plush pillow

Superstitions aside, anybody would be lucky to have this little kitty in their home. If the jingle bell around its neck starts ringing on its own, call an exorcist.

4
Spider and web appetizer plates

The spider is enjoying the meal it caught in its web, so you should feel free to trap your own snack on these festive dishes .

5
A lost in the woods table runner

If you're thinking "What's so scary about some trees?", you clearly haven't seen "The Blair Witch Project." Bonus tip: This table runner could absolutely double as "wintery woods" and give you an excuse to keep it around through December.

6
A cemetery-themed serving tray

R.I.P. to the tasty treats your guests are about to gobble up. If you plan on hosting any kind of gathering this season, this party plate is a must.

7
A pumpkin bowl

Those eyes! That smile! It feels wrong to fill this candy bowl and cover up that handsome jack-o'-lantern face.

8
A spider and web dessert stand

You could proudly display your baking accomplishments on this stand , but non-bakers can just use it as a centerpiece with a candle burning in the middle of it.

9
A creepy critters table runner

It was hard to choose just one table runner, but luckily there are probably other surfaces in your home where you could make use of this cotton-linen blend runner adorned with bats, snakes and frogs.
