We all have our own, individual skin type and concerns — a fact you probably already know to be true if you’ve ever gone shopping for moisturizers and serums. Maybe your main focus is treating acne , or maybe you’re more interested in counteracting dry skin. The bottom line: our complexions are as varied as the individuals they belong to. But, as we recently found out, you may have more in common with the people around you than you think — at least when it comes to your most pressing skin concerns.
Skinfo recently released a map that shows the most searched skin conditions by state, and the results were honestly surprising. By comparing state-specific data to the national search volume in Google , the company was able to pinpoint the biggest complexion concerns in every single state. The overwhelming trend? Your environment is probably dictating your skin woes.
Your environment is probably dictating your skin woes.
“Our skin reacts to the environment in various ways in order to protect itself,” explains dermatologist Dr. S. Manjula Jegasothy . “For example, in sunny, humid climates, the skin doesn’t have to worry about transepidermal water loss as compared to dry, cold climates.”
This isn’t to say you should move to another state. “Depending on where you live, use products that suit that climate,” says Dr. Jegasothy. “For example, use light serums and sunscreen all year if you live in a warm, sunny climate. In dry, cold climates, opt for hydrating lotions and creams.” So, the next time you go to Sephora, consider this a useful tool to help you narrow down your shopping cart. Who knew geography lessons could be so useful?
