Yahoo Lost $42 Million On Original Content Like 'Community'

And we were so close to "six seasons and a movie."

This doesn't bode well for the future of Greendale.

The perpetually low-rated cult series "Community" has artfully dodged cancellation for six seasons -- losing a showrunner , a primetime spot on NBC and a couple key cast members in the process.

Yahoo saved "Community" from cancellation last year and exclusively debuted the series' sixth season on its video streaming platform Yahoo Screen. Well, it turns out fan enthusiasm isn't enough to turn a profit.

According to Variety, Yahoo lost $42 million on original programming in its third quarter for series like "Community," “Sin City Saints” and “Other Space.”

Commenting on the sizable loss, CFO Ken Goldman gave little hope that "Community" would see another day on Yahoo.

“We thought long and hard about it," Goldman said during the company's third-quarter earnings call, "and what we concluded is [for] certain of our original video [series], we couldn’t see a way to make money over time."

“We’re not saying we’re not going to do these at all in the future," he added, "but what we are saying is, in three cases at least, it didn’t work the way we had hoped it to work, and we’ve decided to move on.”

"Community" creator Dan Harmon told TVLine at Comic-Con in July that he "would guess" that the show is over, but there is still hope for a movie wrap-up

"Given the actors velocity and trajectory that the likelihood of getting them to sign on for another 13 episodes of a Yahoo series is less than the likelihood of getting them back together for an awesome movie," he said.

Yahoo has yet to officially cancel the series or scrap its plans for a movie, so don't lose faith yet "Community" fans!
