The 73-year-old received Best Supporting Actress for "Minari," in which she played the lovable and foul-mouthed grandmother, Soon-ja.
The "Sound of Metal" star joked that he was Fatima Farheen Mirza's "official groomer" for the evening.
"My mom is probably gonna text me some stuff," Kaluuya joked after his memorable speech.
The "Nomadland" director follows Kathryn Bigelow, who became the only female winner in the category in 2010 for "The Hurt Locker."
"If things had come differently this past week in Minneapolis, I may have traded in my heels for marching boots, the "One Night In Miami" director said.
