Businessman Siamak Namazi endured interrogations as the story dropped.
The attacks are believed to be linked to the arrest of an Iranian-American businessman in Tehran, the Wall Street Journal reported.
The report comes as Washington has urged Tehran to free three other Americans it is holding.
