The Memphis Police Department lieutenants comments in the courtroom directly contradicted defense attorneys arguments from earlier this week.
Nichols, a 29-year-old Black man, was killed in early 2023.
Demetrius Haley, Tadarrius Bean and Justin Smith are the former Memphis police officers left facing charges of civil rights violations in the death of Tyre Nichols.
WHAT'S HAPPENING
Emmitt Martin had previously pleaded not guilty to federal charges in connection to Nichols beating and death.
The GOP-led state legislature has voted on a bill that would restrict local governments from passing police reform measures.
House Bill 1931 was introduced after Memphis approved police reform measures in response to the death of Tyre Nichols last year.
The fact that you cannot put any finger on any type of real change is deafening," said one Memphis activist.
While working as a corrections officer, Demetrius Haley was accused of excessive force.
Desmond Mills Jr. has also agreed to cooperate with prosecutors, who are recommending a 15-year sentence for his role in Nichols' death.
