The Revenant triumphs at BAFTA awards

The survival drama The Revenant, much of which was filmed in Alberta and B.C., took the top awards at this year's BAFTAs, including best film, actor and director.

Leonardo DiCaprio won for hisrole of fur trapper Hugh Glass fighting for his life in The Revenant, whichhas also earned him hissixth Oscar nomination.

Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, who directed the notoriously-challengingepic, wonbest director.

Among the other winners, Brie Larson, who wasn't there,won best leading actress for her portrayal of a mother held captive in Room.

Kate Winslet won for her supporting role as Joanna Hoffmanin the film Steve Jobs.

Mark Rylance won best supporting actor for the Steven Spielberg directed Cold War film Bridge of Spies.

Hundreds of fans gathered to watch the stars arrive at the Royal Opera House on a cool, crisp London evening.

Among the arrivals were nomineesMarkRuffalo,MichaelFassbender,CateBlanchett,SaoirseRonan, Steven Spielberg and the latestStar Warshero JohnBoyega, who won the Rising Star award.

Like Hollywood's Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the British film academy says it will work to make sure its 6,500 voting members become a more diverse group.

On the red carpet, Boyega said he was glad the issue was being aired. "I just think a larger conversation is being had and I think that's a very, very positive thing," he said.
