A reboot of 90s TV favourite Xena: Warrior Princess could be headed to screens next year.

Xena is in the early stages of development at NBC, according to Variety and other industry trade publications.

Original creator Rob Tapert and original executive producer Sam Raimi are involved in the project, with talk of a potential 2016 debut.

However, original star Lucy Lawless, who has been campaigning to revive the popular series for some time, said the reboot was "still in the wishful thinking stage."

The campy, cult television series starring Lawless as a mighty warrior fighting for redemption and the greater good was originally a spin-off of Hercules: The Legendary Journeys.

Running 1995-2001, the series blended pop culture references and a loose interpretation of mythology with comedy, action and fantasy. The Xena character is often cited as a trailblazer for other subsequent strong female action heroes.

Talk of a Xena reboot comes amid a current wave of 90s TV revival projects, with Jem and the Holograms, The X-Files, Twin Peaks, Full House and Coach all slated to return.
