A five-year-old boy from Rossland, B.C., is on the mend after being attacked by a cougar in Washington state on Wednesday.

The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife said the boy was on a mountain trail in Colville National Forest when the cougar suddenly appeared from behind some brush and pounced on him.

The boy was with his family at the time of the attack and his mother was able to fight the animal off.

He was treated at hospital for head wounds but has since been released and is expected to make a full recovery.

Conservation officials are searching for the cougar and if the animal is found, it will be destroyed. The cougar attack is the first in Washington state this year and occurred just south of the border, near the town of Northport.
