Human foot found on southern Vancouver Island

Sooke RCMP confirm human remains were discovered Thursday morning.

A human foothas beendiscovered in the Jordan River areanorthwest of Sooke, B.C.

SookeRCMPsay aman was walking his dogs around 8 a.m. Thursday, when one of the dogs found thefoot, which was still in a shoe and had part of the leg attached.

The B.C. Coroners Servicesay the man took the bones home and then contacted police, who attended the scene along with an assistant coroner.

The bones a foot, tibia, and fibula have been seized and the area searched.

The investigation is now in the hands of the B.C. Coroners Service, which will work to identify the deceased and determine cause of death.

Andy Watson of the B.C. Coroners Service says they are in theearly stages of the investigation, but have determined the bones are those of a human.

He asked people who make similar discoveries to call the authorities immediately.

"In this case, someone out walking their dog[s] took the bones home. Certainly no ill intent there, but if people do see something like that in the future, call us before touching the remains."

RCMP are doing another sweep Friday to see if there are any other remains.

This is the 13th foot found along the B.C. coastsince 2007. The most recent wasin February2016 at Botanical Beach, approximately 74 kilometresnorth of Sooke.
