Canmore RCMP say two women living in Alberta have been taken for more than $300,000 in an online dating scam.

Police say a man used an online dating site to solicit money from the womenthrough wire transfers.

They say the suspect initiates relationships with women and soon requests large sums of money, promising he'll pay them back when he receives money from fictitious sources.

Officers say the suspect is convincing and gains trust by making women believe they are in a real relationship with him.

"We do believe he hasn't stopped at these two," said Const. Tyson Perry."We believe there could be more out there and we are urging the public if they have more information or if they are possibly involved in this to come forward to Canmore RCMP."

Police areasking the public to be vigilant when dealing with unknown persons online.

  • Canmore RCMP said earlier that two local women were targeted in the scam. They later said the women do not live in Canmore, but in other areas of Alberta.
