Young girl in car with parents when police find kilogram of cocaine

A couple's three-year-old daughter was in the car when they were stopped by officers in southeast Calgary last week and more than a kilogram of cocaine was found, police say.

A couple's three-year-old daughter was in the car when they were stopped by officers in southeast Calgary last week and more than a kilogram of cocaine was found, police say.

ALERT Calgary's organized crime and gang team stopped the vehicle on May 10 at a gas station in Penbrooke Meadows.

A 29-year-old man and a 27-year-old woman were in the vehicle with their three-year-old daughter.

A search turned up 1,007 grams of cocaine with an estimated value of more than $100,000.

The man and woman were arrested and each was charged with one count of possession of a controlled substance for the purposes of trafficking.

Situation unacceptable

"We're happy to have seized these drugs, but we're even happier to ensure the safety of this young child," said ALERT Insp. Patty McCallum in a release.

The Calgary Police Service's child-at-risk response team (CARRT)is also investigating the incident.

"Needlessly putting children into dangerous situations like this is unacceptable, and we're grateful for the support of partners like CARRT to ensure she remains safe," McCallum said.

ALERT is a provincially funded group of police officers thatfocuses on serious and organized crime. It includes members of the Calgary Police Service, Edmonton Police Service,LethbridgePolice Service, Medicine Hat Police Service and the RCMP.
