Calgary police uncover skimming workshop

Calgary police have shut down what they are calling a workshop for building credit card skimming machines.

About 100 devices used for skimming data from credit and debit cards were uncovered during a search of a southwest Calgary apartment on May 25 by city police and U.S. Secret Service investigators.

Police announced Wednesday that they recovered several pieces of equipment that were allegedly used to skim card information at automated teller machines.

The deviceswere for salefor about $5,000 on a website, said Det. Spencer Frizzell.

Police also seized $30,000and several credit cards.

A Calgary manwas arrestedas a result of the 18-month investigation by law enforcement officials on both sides of the Canada-U.S. border.

The 26-year-old was charged with two counts of exporting adevice for forging or falsifying credit cards, one count of possession of a device for forging or falsifying credit cards and one count of possession of proceeds of crime.
