Husband Hien Tuan Lam charged with killing wife, wounding daughter in Pineridge

A Calgary man has been charged with first-degree murder and attempted murder one day after his wife was fatally shot and his daughter injured at a house in Pineridge.

Police were called to the house in the 6900 block of Rundlehorn Drive. N.E. just after midnight on Tuesday for reports of gunshots.

Hue Ngoc Nguyen, 41, was found dead at the scene.

Her 15-year-old daughter was taken to hospital in non-life-threatening conditionwith a suspected gunshot wound, policesaid.

Insp. Don Coleman of the major crimes unit says it appears a conflict built over several hours.

"It is our belief that over the period of the day there was significant tension in the home which led to a prolonged argument which ultimately led to a physical confrontation between the three involved persons which led to the discharging of the firearm,"Colemansaid.

He said police believe there was "domestic history that had gone unreported."

The suspectfled in a pickup truck with the couple's two younger children, an 11-year-old girl and athree-year-old boy.

Hewas stopped by police a short time later on Whitehorn Drive N.E.

He fired one shot in the air from inside the truck, but was quickly arrestedwithout incident after police surrounded him.

The two children were unharmed.

Police say all five people were family members.

The father, Hien Tuan Lam, 43, has been charged Wednesdaywith first-degree murder and attempted murder in connection with the shootings.

Coleman saidLam had been prohibited from owning a firearm.

"I don't know how it was obtained but the offender in this incident is prohibited from possessing firearms, he does have a firearms prohibition," he said.

Police say a majority of domestic violence cases go unreported.

Lam is expected to make his first appearance in court on Thursday.
