Fatal Easter weekend crash brings impaired driving charges against Calgary man

Police have charged a 30-year-old Calgary man with numerous criminal offences, nearly four months after he was involved in a fatal crash that sent a vehicle careening over the Glenmore Trail median and into oncoming traffic.

Police have charged a30-year-old Calgary man with numerous criminal offences,nearly four months after he was involvedin a fatal crash that sent a vehicle careening over the Glenmore Trail median and into oncoming traffic.

Alexander ShawnSoopfaces charges ofdangerous driving causing death and impaired driving causing death, among other charges, in connection with the Easter weekend collision.

Police said a pickup truck was westbound on Glenmore Trail near Crowchild Trail on March 27 when the driver tried to overtake a Pontiac Grand Prix.

In the process, the truck sideswiped the car.The truck then rotated, crossed the median into oncoming traffic and collided with a Jeep and anIsuzu.

The driver of the Jeep, a man in his 60s, was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene.His wife suffered life-threatening injuries.

Soopwas also injured in the crash andtaken to hospital, along with anotherman and woman, each in their 40s, who were transported in stable condition.

All told, Soop faces six charges:

  • dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death
  • dangerous of operation of motor vehicle causing bodily harm
  • impaired driving by alcohol causing death
  • impaired driving by alcohol causing bodily harm
  • impaired driving over .08 causing bodily harm
  • impaired driving over .08 causing death
