Gabriel Okeynan's teen killer granted bail pending sentencing in homeless man's death

A Calgary teen who was found guilty of manslaughter in the death of a homeless man will be released to his family while he awaits sentencing.

A Calgary teen who was found guilty of manslaughter in the death of a homeless man will be released to his family while he undergoes a psychiatric assessment pending sentencing.

The boy must live with his mother, will be on house arrestand mustundergo counseling as part of his release conditions.

He was found guilty of manslaughter last week.

Gabriel Okeynan, 45, was attacked near Marlborough Mall in June2014. He died in hospital three days later.

Police determined he had been stabbed and beaten a few blocks away.

Two boys who were 13- and 16-years-old at the timewere arrested and charged with second-degree murder.

During the older teen'strial,the boy who has a severe cognitive disability and an IQ of 45,testified in his own defencetelling the judgehe kicked Okeynantwice"gently"in the shoulder but said he never stabbed him.

In his decision, the judge said he didn't believe thestory, calling it "convenient."

The younger teen pleaded guilty to manslaughter and was sentenced Monday afternoon. He will serve the rest of his sentence in a group home.
