Nirmala Naidoo seeks Liberal nomination in Calgary Rocky Ridge
Longtime journalist previously anchored CBC Calgary's supper-hour newscast
FormerCBC Calgary anchorNirmala Naidoo is looking to make athe leap into politics.
She announcedher intention today to seek the Liberal Party's nomination inCalgary Rocky Ridge.
The newfederal riding is locatedin the city's northwest and replacesparts ofCalgary-West and Calgary Nose Hill, which are ridings currently held by Conservative MPs DianeAblonczy and Rob Anders.
For years Calgarians have trusted me with telling their stories but I felt the frustration of not being able to influence the direction of that story," she said in a release.
"I have listened to the stories of Calgarians and now I want to bring those voices to Ottawa.
Naidoohas been in broadcasting for the past 19 years.
She says her family has always held Liberal values.Naidoo's sister is a member of the Ontario legislature.
My family moved to Canada to escape apartheid in South Africa in the1960s," she said.
"We came here, like most immigrants, because of Canadas open and accepting progressive policies and values.I am committed to promoting those values, and I believe my voice will be best heard through the Liberal Party of Canada.
