Perdomo grandparents accused of killing 5-year-old also charged with welfare fraud in Alberta

The Calgary grandparents accused of killing five-year-old Eneas Emilio Perdomo also face fraud charges related to accusations they lied to the Alberta government in order to collect social assistance.

The Calgary grandparents accused of killing five-year-old Eneas Emilio Perdomo also face fraud charges related to accusations they lied to the Alberta government in order to collect social assistance.

Allan Edgardo Perdomo Lopez, the boy'sgrandfather andCarolina Del Carmen Perdomo, Emilio'sstep-grandmother were charged with manslaughter last month after a year-long investigation into the child's death.

The couple also facetwo charges related to accusations they lied to Alberta Human Services between April 2015 and March 2016.

Lawyers for the pair appeared in court on Monday, with the matter put over until Aug. 30.

Emilio, who was born in Mexico City,came to Canada without his mother a few months before he died.

The boy was taken to hospital on July 10, 2015suffering from injuries. At the time, his grandparents said they were the result of several accidents.

Staff at the hospital noticed swelling and bruising all over the child's body, according to police.The boy died a week later.

The couple turned themselves in to police last month.

They were released on bail with both required to surrender their passports,post a surety of $5,000 and are not allowed to contact each other.
