Calgarys Peace Bridge thats been under construction for over a year and a half is scheduled to be completed by the end of this year, city officials announced Friday

The $25 million pedestrian bridge on the Southbank of the Bow River was slated to be complete last October but encountered some problems and no word was given on progress until Friday.

City transportation spokeswoman Jennifer De Vries said at this point any structural problems like those of the weldshave been dealt with and most of the work behind the enclosure now is surface based.

"We are done the inspections on the welds and any necessary repairs that were needed so we are moving forward with the painting and then the installation of the glass," De Vries said.

The project was due to be complete in last November but ran behind scheduleafter problems were discovered with the weldsdone by workers in Spain.

As surface work is being completed now parts of the enclosure will be pulled back within the next few days.

Once the work on the bridge is done the bridge will be hoisted across the Bow and set into place by giant cranes.

De Vries assured that even though the project was delayed it remains on budget and the city is not being held responsible for any costs that might have accumulated due to delays.
