Jessie Dyck charged with manslaughter in death of Tanya Campbell-Losier

A man from Brooks is now facing manslaughter charges in the death of 19-year-old Tanya Campbell-Losier.

STORY UPDATE: Jessie Dyck pleaded guilty to manslaughter and was sentenced on May 15, 2018 to 21 months in custody and three years of probation, as well as a lifetime firearm prohibition.

The young woman died in a Calgary hospital last weekendtwo days after the incidenttook place.

Her boyfriendJessie Dyckhad been initially charged withaggravated assault.

The 26-year-old remains in custody in Medicine Hat.

RCMP and EMS had beencalled to a Brooks residence at 3:55 a.m. lastFridayand foundCampbell-Losierwith severe injuries.

Dyckisscheduled to make his next court appearance onMarch 1.

Community impact

Campbell-Losier's mom, Lorraine Losier, spoke to CBC News about her lossthis week.

"I want to go in a field and run and run and run and run until I fall down. That's not going to bring her back. Nothing is going to bring her back," she said.

She knows from her own experience with abusehow difficult it is to leave.

"When you love somebody you think, 'Okay, they're going to change,' especially when they tell you 'I'm going to change, I'm never doing that to you again. Never, ever, ever.' I've been in that position myself," she said.

Shauna Bell,the executive director of Cantara Safe House in Brooks, says the death has affected the entire communitya town where over 10 per cent of the population sought help from the local women's shelter last year.
