Anti-abortion display divides University of Alberta students

An anti-abortion protest planned for the University of Alberta this week is angering students who object to the display of graphic images in a high-traffic area of campus.

The student group called Go Life plans to show images of aborted fetuses in the quad, an outdoor area students cross to get from building to building.

Student Zoe Chaytors, an organizer of a group planning to protest the Go Life display, says the images might trigger bad memories for people who have pass through the quad to get to class.

Specifically if there are people who have terminated a pregnancy, who've gone through a miscarriage or lost a baby, or if they're people who had a stillborn, she said.

We just want all people to feel safe here while they get an education.

Amberlee Nicol from Go Life says students need to see the images and confront the reality of abortion.

If people find an image of a small child with her skull crushed and her limbs torn off to be offensive, then maybe it's abortion they should be angry at, instead of the picture, she said.

The university says Go Life has the right to free speech like any other student group on campus.

Chaytors says hundreds of students are expected to come to the protest on Tuesday.
