Death inspires website for outdoor enthusiasts

A website to help people avoid dangerous encounters with wildlife in Alberta's backcountry was inspired by a woman killed by a grizzly bear.

Monday marks the one-year anniversary of the death of Isabelle Dube, 36.

Dube, a mother of one, was running with friends near the Silver Tip Golf Course in Canmore when they encountered the grizzly.

Her friends backed away, while Dube climbed a tree to escape the animal. When wildlife officers reached the scene, they discovered that the bear had killed her.

In Dube's memory, outdoor enthusiasts have now started a website on how people can peacefully co-exist with wildlife.

On it, users can post up-to-date information about popular biking and hiking trails around southern Alberta, from the foothills all the way into the mountains.

The project is personal for Jean McAllister, who was with Dube on the day she died.

McAllister said the group is trying to reduce the risk of such a tragedy happening again.
