Edmontonians urged to recycle concrete waste

The city is encouraging Edmonton homeownersto recycle broken concrete, crumbling bricks and discarded paving stones.

Thecity recycles concrete, asphalt and othermaterials fromdemolitions and household renovations free of charge.

"These programs provide an economical source of recycled material the city then uses to construct and maintain streets and sidewalks," said Blair Buchholtz, general supervisor of aggregate recycling facilities.

The program has processed more than4 million tonnes of material since it started.

Reusing the materialsaves the city more than $15 million a year in landfill and gravel costs.
