Hamilton moves Remembrance Day service online, cancels community ceremonies

The city of Hamilton says this year's Remembrance Day service will be virtual in order to adhere to public health restrictions on large gatherings andmanage the spread of COVID-19.

On Nov. 11, the public can watch the service at 10:30 a.m. on Cable 14 or online atwww.cable14.com.

This will include a special broadcast of "Hamilton Remembers," which will highlight past Remembrance Day services in the city, says a media release.

Community services coordinated by local legions in Hamilton have also been cancelled.There won't be any military parade, live performances, or public wreath laying.

Anyone who wishesto have a wreath placed at the cenotaph on behalf of their organization can leave their wreaths at the Hamilton Military Museum between Nov. 4 and Nov. 10.

"As the pandemic has prevented us from gathering together in person, it is more important than ever to honour our veterans and military members by attending virtual Remembrance Day events and by wearing red poppies in honour of those who served and sacrificed their future to protect the freedom of our country," said Mayor Fred Eisenberger in a media release.

"On Wednesday, November 11, I encourage community members to come together online to reflect and remember the hundreds of thousands of brave Canadians who fought for us."

The AvroLancaster will fly over the cenotaphs in Hamilton in honour of the day, weather-permitting.

Remembrance Day educational videos made by Hamilton Veterans Committee and staff from the Hamilton Military Museumwill also be available on the city's YouTube channel.

"Hero Windows" featuring images of past military services will be on display on the Lister Block. Alive piper will play in front of the exhibit on Nov. 4 and Nov. 11 at 11 a.m.
