Guillermo del Toro to film 'Crimson Peak' in Hamilton

Award-winning director Guillermo del Toro will be in town next month filming his new movie Crimson Peak at Dundurn National Historic site, CBC Hamilton has learned.

Filming is set to begin on April 10. The crew will also use sites in Kingston and Toronto for the film.

A source tells CBC Hamilton the crew needed a place where they can do an archaeology scene and have Victorian-style home in the back. Dundurn Castle and its grounds could no doubt act as the right kind of creepy setting for the Gothic horror film, set in England.

Del Toro told Deadline Hollywood Crimson Peak is best described as a very set-oriented, classical but at the same time modern take on the ghost story.

It will allow me to play with the conventions of the genre I know and love, and at the same time subvert the old rules, he said.

The film will channel elements of throwback horror films like The Haunting, The Omen and The Shining, he says. Del Toro has hinted that Crimson Peak is more a return to his Spanish horror roots likeThe Devils Backbone and Pans Labyrinth a far cry from the robotic bombast of Pacific Rim.

Crimson Peak stars Tom Hiddleston of Loki fame from The Avengers, Charlie Hunnam from Pacific Rim, Mia Wasikowska from Alice in Wonderland and Jessica Chastain from Mama.

Benedict Cumberbatch and Emma Stone were originally attached to the project, but dropped out some months ago.

Crimson Peak is coming to theatres on Oct. 16, 2015.
